Precise calibration of industrial cameras is a crucial factor for quality assurance in modern manufacturing. Without correctly calibrated cameras, even the most advanced AI algorithms cannot deliver reliable results.

A leading technology company in the manufacture of telecommunications equipment and electronic products needed a user-friendly solution to simplify and standardize the complex calibration process. Our task was to develop an intuitive web interface that guides users through the entire calibration process while providing an overview of all available camera systems.

The developed application guides users step by step through the calibration process and supports them with illustrative graphics and clear instructions. This structured approach ensures that even employees without in-depth technical understanding can correctly perform the calibration process.

A special feature of the application is the split-screen overview, which provides a quick overview of all available cameras and detailed information about each individual camera. This comprehensive solution complements an earlier project where we developed a user interface for the industrial company to interact with 3D point clouds generated from industrial camera scans of workpieces.

Our Services

User-Oriented Conception and UI/UX Design

The development of the Camera Calibration Service began with a thorough analysis of the existing calibration process and the needs of the end users. We conducted a detailed requirements analysis to gain a deep understanding of the challenges and problem areas in the calibration process at that time.

Based on these insights, we developed a user-oriented concept that divides the complex calibration process into clearly defined, logical steps. For each step, intuitive user interfaces were designed that guide the user through the process with visual aids and clear instructions. Special attention was paid to the visualization of complex technical concepts through illustrative graphics and interactive elements.

A central element of the UI/UX design was the development of the split-screen overview, which enables efficient management and monitoring of multiple cameras. This view was designed to provide both a quick overview and detailed information about individual cameras without requiring the user to switch between different views. Through iterative prototype testing and feedback loops with end users, we were able to continuously optimize the interface and create an intuitive, efficient user experience suitable for both technically proficient and less experienced users.

Development of the Web-Based Calibration Assistant

The technical implementation of the Camera Calibration Service is based on a modern tech stack with Vue.js as the frontend framework, Nuxt for server-side rendering and optimized performance, Node.js for backend functionalities, and Three.js for the visualization of 3D data. This technology combination enables a responsive, user-friendly application with powerful backend functions.

A particular focus during development was on the seamless integration of the application with existing camera systems and calibration hardware. We implemented robust APIs that enable reliable communication between the web application and the physical devices. This allows real-time feedback during the calibration process and enables immediate validation of calibration results.

Special Challenges

Precise Visualization of the Calibration Process

One of the biggest challenges in this project was the development of visual aids that correctly and comprehensibly represent the complex calibration process. The precise calibration of industrial cameras requires millimeter-precise positioning and specific environmental conditions that must be correctly conveyed in a web interface.

Integration with Existing Systems and Workflows

The integration of the Camera Calibration Service into the existing IT infrastructure and workflows presented another significant challenge. The application had to work seamlessly with various camera types, control systems, and databases that were already in use.
